Vic: 98-year-old sunken ferry faces rescue operation
The owner of a 98-year-old ferry .. that's sunk in soft mud in Melbourne's Docklands
.. says he's not sure how long her rescue operation will take.
The historic Sydney ferry .. MV Lady Chelmsford .. sank in Victoria Harbour about 5.30
(AEDT) yesterday afternoon.
Owner KEITH RANKIN says while there's oil seeping out and bubbling to the surface ..
every effort's being made made to ensure it won't become environmentally hazardous.
The rescue operation could prove to be a major drama .. whether it's lifted by crane
or disassembled in the harbour.
The 140-tonne ferry's engine weighs 14 tonnes alone .. which could prove troublesome
if she's taken apart below the water's surface.
